Default Diagnostic Code 31 - Help

My wife's 95 neon is giving us this for the self-diagnostic check. Engine won't start at all, only clicking sound from this part - 4669475. Any idea how much something like this would cost to replace? I think it's the evap solenoid? Please help!

You are going ot have to replace the evap purge solenoid. Not sure how much it costs but I can tell you that you are going to want to replace that and the spark plugs because chances are they too are fouled up.

If I am thinking right you are talking about the Purge canister soliniod, that is usually caused by overfilling the gas tank. That is no reason for the car not to start, that is a totally different problem.

Ummm....if he's getting a code 31 for the purge solenoid then yes, it will cause the car not to start as it is most likely duping insane amounts of fuel to correct itself which will lead to fouled spark plugs and as we all know, no spark no start.

The '88 Shelby Z that I sold to my exstep brother is throwing the purge canister solenoid code and it is driveable and runs. It does have an unstable idle and does die when coming to a stop sometimes, but it fires right back up. It also is down on power due to this. He has ordered another and it will be in this week, hopefully it will fix the problem.

Update: Replaced the evap purge solenoid. Car still not turning over. "Clicking" sound has moved from the solenoid to the purge canister now and car is still showing code 31. Could this just be an electrical problem? The main thing to note here is that the car will not even turn over, but has power (int lights). I've checked the starter fuse and it's still good. Any suggestions?

I was having a similar problem, you might check the relays- those black cubes next to the fuses in the engine bay. I have a first gen as well and they sound like the same prob but I got a different code. Hope it works out Check the auto shut douwn especially it might be stck. They cost like nine bucks at the local parts store.

Have you reset the computer? If not start there. Disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 minutes to an hour. Also, did you change the spark plugs?

71RoadRunner, yeah, eventually though it'll just not start. It happened to my Neon when my solenoid went.
