Roadrunner on the SOHC neons is there anyway to get to the cam without tearing the motor apart and/or takeing the motor out? The cams are cheap but paying a mechanic to put one in would be as much or more than the damn part.

Not 100% sure about the SOHC - but the DOHC isnt too bad, but it takes a little effort!
1st jack the engine up to remove the Motor mount, pull the pulley, remove the belt cover, loosen the timing belt, and remove the rocker cover - and wholla - you can unbolt your cam!

All you need to do to get the cam out is tilt the engine up on the passenger side to slide the cam out, you don't need to remove the engine. Here is a great link for you on modding a SOHC Neon: http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/pr...2scc_projneon/

For some odd reason they never put the last 2 parts of their Neon project car on their web site yet, part 3 has the cam replacement. When I find it, I have all 4 parts, I will PM the last two parts to you in .jpg form.[sm=smiley2.gif]

Cool, if its going to be something I can do in my garage that would save a lot of money.

It is definately something you can do in your garage - I can only think of one special tool you might need and that is a 3 Jaw puller to remove the front pulley - again - this is what I go through on my DOHC Neon!

Nice Link 71RoadRunner!

Greg

Ahhhhh - Tomorrow night I will pick up my Head and start bolting my NYG back together getting ready to race Road Atlanta about this time next week!

I would be real interested in that 3rd part. I will be replacing the cam on project neon real soon seen as the timeing belt tensioner brg. went bad.

Since you have a SOHC 2.0L most any bolt on mods will be 100% useless until you replace the cam in it. First mod should be to replace the stock cam with one of the Crane cams for it, then you can really start to modify it for actual and noticable gains.[sm=smiley2.gif]
RoadRunner - I was checking into putting a K&N Air Charger and APexi catback onto my 03 Neon SXT manual and was curious if I would just be humoring myself by doing so and not really gaining anything worth my while. I have the extended warranty on the car and don't want to get too carried away until that is a distant memory. Should I even bother or would these two items fall under the "most any bolt on mods will be 100% useless...".

Thanks!!!

Don't you need some other mods first before you go replacing the cam? Which one is good for someone who's probably going to go to town modding the car, the crane 14?

No you don't need anyother mods before you do the cam. I wouldn't use the crane 14 unless you plan on building a complete high compression, high reving, full race engine. If you want a good cam thats still streetable I would get the #12. Actually Project neon is getting a #12 pretty quick here so I will let you know the difference.

Everthing will help a little, but when they are all put together and are balanced, then you will notice a true gain in hp and performance.
