which gear best for 300HP+?
"·What manual transaxle setup is best for a high HP 2GNT?
some single over-head cam neon transmissions from 94 to 99 had a 3.55 final drive ratio. the increased size of the pinion gear and the casting of the ring gear make the setup more durable than the 94-99 3.94 final drive. some dual and single over-head cam transmissions had a .72 5'th gear. in 2000 (2001 model cars) the 3.94 final drive set was "UPDATED" to add strength to the pinion and ring gear, which makes them as durable as the 3.55 set. the 2001 1'st and 4'th gear ratios were also changed from 3.53 to 3.50 and 1.03 to .97 respectively in the base model neon. those also came equipped with a 3.55 final drive gear set, and "thicker" 1'st and second gears. in 2002, the 5'th gear was changed to .72 from teh .81 in teh previous year gear set. I believe the acr and the r/t transmissions retained the original gearing, but heavier duty 1'st and second gear, and final drive. the 2001+ transmissions use the same hydraulic slave cylinder that our cars do, and only require replacign the shift arms and mounting brackets. the 2002 base model transmission is the transmission of choice for high speed, high hp car."
what do you guys think about this?i plan on having a high boost setup by the time im done with my 02 neon es 3.55 fd. would it be beneficial tokeep the taller gear in there when i have all that horsepower? because right now i know its just a pain to have such a tall gear without the power to back it up. when i try to accelerate quickly, 2nd gear isthebig dissapointment to me do to its long leggedness... will that go away when i have a higher HP setup. im not interested in going faster than 100 or so on occasion in a neon, but i do like the idea of less wheel spin. ive watched lots of videos of turboed neons and it seems like as soon as they hit the powerban the car starts to bake the tires.
anybody have a high hp car with the 3.55 and happy with it???
in the 1/4 mile how would they compare on the same car?

RE: which gear best for 300HP+?
Ever since I added the mods to my signature, I went and bought another trans b/c my original one was slipping. I ended up buying a used trans and the car was still slipping after the installation. The first mechanic that had my car did all the mods to my signature and did a whole lot of other work (replacing the alternator, power steering pump, etc.). He also installed a (I believe it's a Zoom) high performance clutch.
First we were wondering if the trans was slipping b/c a piece could have gotten messed up during the installation. My other mechanic that has the car now, did some more work to the car; he also ended up taking the trans to a few transmission places. They said the car was probably slipping b/c the trans wasn't built to handle all the mods I've done to my car. We've decided to rebuilt the transmission and make it more durable for high performance.
BTW, both transmissions were slipping bad in 3rd gear and 5th gear.
I'm going to get a quote from a trans place in the morning.
What do you guys think of that?
These are the other mods I have on my car.
Perform. mods: AFX Race PCM, AEM CAI, Pacesetter Header & C-back, AFX Underdrive Pulley, 60mm MPx Throttle Body, Prothane Motor M. Inserts, Accel 19lb Fuel inj., Vibrant front strut tower bar, Progress Rear Sway Bar, B. bushings

I haven't heard of a "Zoom" clutch. But I don't see why your tranny would be slipping. You don't have a turbo or spraying nitrous. I had about the equivelant to what mods you have on my 97 and did just fine on the stock tranny. You may want to look into a better clutch maybe or an LSD.
