Another mod this weekend ...
Man I was busy this weekend. The weather was FINALLY nice, and beforeI headed out on the scoot for the summer I wanted to take care of a couple of mods that have been on my mind. First was Diesel Demons mod ( see other topic ) and this was the other.
I'll be reaching 120K in a few weeks, so sinceI was under the truck anyway I figured I'd change the oil now. I use Rotella oil and MAN does it stink !! It REAKS for about the first 500 miles after changing theoil, andI was told the smell comes from the by-pass tubeand the radiator fan blows it into the cab. I was told the bast way to get rid of the smell was to extend the by-pass tube past the cab, so this weekendI did. I used 1" PVC and the 3/4" ID hose slipped nicely into the 1" PVC. The hose wasn't tight, but it didn't swim in there either. I used 45 degree elbows to help everything flow smoother.I ran the PVC all the way down the frame to just before the gas tank.
Here are the pics. If you think I screwed something up, let me know. I haven't driven the truck much since adding the tube, but the 30 or so miles that I have driven it I haven't smelled a thing.

RE: Another mod this weekend ...
You have been a busy boy.
On the draft tube I would extend it down lower than the tank and balony slice it, that way if any oil mist dose come out of it it won't get all over the bottom of the truck.
On the drain valve I have reservations that it would be to easy to get knocked off when off road or by road debre getting kicked up and hiting it. It has the possabilty of leaving you in a bad place with no oil in the engine.
Please don't take this as critizium but as suggestions.
PS I had an oil drain valve knocked off about 40 years ago, since then when I install one I protect it with a skid plate and run a hose from the valve past the skid plate.

If you get high enough to knock off the quick drain you got bigger problems to deal with.
But then I never figured my Ram to be an off road truck with all that weight up front, besides in Florida we don't have rocks, just sand everywhere, so not much to knock it off even if your trying.

Captain ... I hear ya about dropping the pipe. I was hopeing to extend it past the gas tank all the way to the back, but it was turning into more of a project than I wanted to get into. It just didn't look right going below the fuel tank, and attaching thepipe was going to be a challenge. The main reason for extending it was to hopefully eliminate the oil smell. ( still so far so good )As far as the oil drippings, I'm not really too worried about that. I park on a hill"rear down" every night so any oil that is gonna drip is gonna drip after I park onto my driveway.
I'm not really worried about snapping the plug off. I don't go offroad at all, and to be honest with you the valve still sits higher than the front axle so if anything hits anything, it's gonna hit the front axle first.
UpBranch ... the valve is a 2 step process. You hafta push OUT while pulling DOWN at the same time, so there really is no chance of it working it's way open all by itself. I wouldn't let that worry you at all.
