Default AC problems .... anybody know what this is ??

I knew it was comming, and it has. My AC problem has returned. Basically what happens is my AC works fine when you first turn it on.Oncethings cool down, I'll turn the speed down. After a while it'll feel like the AC isn't working, so I'll turn up the speed again only now the fan sounds loud and it kinda smells like something is frozen. I wind up having to turn the AC off for a while ( to let something thaw out ) and when I turn it back on everything works fine again ... for a while and then it freezes up again and the whole process starts over.

Today I looked under the hood and I saw THIS thing frozen up at the bottom. What is it? Any ideas as to what I need to do to make my AC work right again?

Your compressor is overworking because a switch/vacuum line is not allowing coolant in. When you initally turn it on full blast, some component is switched to 100%, and when you turn it down it is still open and freezes up. Check for clogs in the heat exchanger or a broken vac line

Is that thing that I have pointed out the heat exchanger? How do I go about checking for clogs? Where might I find this vac line?

Thanks for the compliment on the truck. It doesn't always look that way. I just cleaned it up over the weekend. I found that Simple Green now makes a spray foam type of cleaner so idecided to try it out. Worked pretty good. After it was cleaned I sprayed it all down with some S-100 to help keep it clean.

AC might overcharged. Because too much refrigerant would cut the engine. Why don't you try to hook up the AC gauge. Bet the pressure is way over... depends on how hot the weather is there. Some say, dodge truck parts are just like that, but it's not really a big problem anyway...

Goodluck!!!

I cant see the pic. . .however if something is frozen that means you dont have enough refergerant. things are actualy getting too cold and the condensation that is removed when cooling the air freezes to the evaporator.

you probably have a pin hole leak somewhere.

What ever you do don't take to a A/C man, they want to replace my whole system when I got a slow leak in the o rings, a buddy told me about stop leak for 134a and it been working for 10 years since with no problem.

I'm with Drew you low on 134a stick a can of stop leak in it and you can get the can with a gage on it now days so you don't over fill the system

the cans have a step by step page with em.

used the guage o' can of 134a on a truck i used to have. took a few tries to get it right, but it did work.

grab the refill can, a six pack o' suds, and give it a shot!
