Default Whats a good Descent oil to use ?

This topic is probably old but what is a good oil. i bought a used 2004 CTD and dont know what the customer was putting in it? How can i tell if he was using synthetic? or would it matter if i used synthetic or not? If so which rating? 15w40? or just use normal rotella or petro canada 15w40. has anyone heard of using CO-OP dmo 15w40 or Boss Lubricants 15w40? Which is a good oil and fuel filter to use? fram or amsoil? I havent really checked good under hood but where exactly is fuel filter and oil filter located?

I use amsoil it seems to be pretty good,i change every 10 to 12 thous. I also have used synthetic rotella 5-40 was excellent in winter could really see the oil pres increase as it warmed up its about the only oil i have seen the pressure go up after warmup instead of loosing pres as it heated up

My self I use Amsoil 5w30 HDD oil year round. But not knowing what the other owner used or how many miles are on your engine I would go with one of these oils, Chevron Delo 400, Valvoline Cummins Blue, Mobile Delvac or Exxon HD. My self I tried the Rotella 5w40 oil and was not very happy with it so I can not recomend it.

Do you use any stabilizer like Lucas or oil additive with it? I have have been using synthetic since 16years old, I know about break in with the ctd but for some reason just feel more confortable with synthetic.

Naah .... just regular ole Rotella. No addtives or anything else, just Rotella. I religiously change it every 5000 miles though. I'd do that regardless of which oil I used though.

Ditto the preferred customer deals on Amsoil. Makes them competitive with other synthetics and they are supposed to be the best anyways. I've got a case of MTG and ATF. I need some gear lube and eventually some engine oil too after my truck is broken in. Gonna run a bypass filter too.
