I am looking to trade my 2500 mega for a 3500 to pull my gooseneck horse trailer, pin weight 3000lbs. The mega 3500 has a gvwr of only 10500 and a curb weight of 7093, with 4 adults and misc I am over gvwr. What doesn't make sense to me is the quad cab, 8' box has a gvwr of 12200 The rear axle gvwr are the same. The difference appears to be in the front axle which has a gvwr of 4750 on the mega and 5200 on the quad. My dealer is trying to get an answer as to why this is different. Anybody? I really like the mega for long trips and have no issues with clearance on the rear window
Don't include the trailer weight when calculating gross vehicle weight. Only calculate the trailer tongue weight, which should be approx 10% of the loaded trailer weight. You should be able to tow well over 10,000 lbs with any CTD Ram
I am pulling a gooseneck trailer. 3000 is the pin weight from weighing it on a scale,(ie the diffeeence in the weight of my truck with and without trailer attached) my trailer weighs 15000 and generally figure 20% of trailer weight for pin weight (15-25, 10 is too low ok for bumper pull) . Duallys are not speced any different but I will be getting duallys. I just really want to know WHY is the front axle speced different between the quad and mega. Any Dodge truck engineers out there.
I've never heard of that. That is very interesting. I was under the impression that it was the exact same frame and such as the LWB trucks, just different cab configuration. I will be interested in seeing what you find out.
If I got you right I would say it is because the beam or frame is longer on the mega cab. In saying that you know the longer your frame is the weaker it becomes.
I believe the frame is the same exact frame used on the quad cabs. That's why the Mega is only available with an 6' bed. The missing 2' are now used on the cab instead of the bed.
