Oh the humanity ! well, I got my motor apart today. Figured I show you guys what I found.
The head gasket held so, that wasn't the problem.

needs some parts.... it's about all they're good for now :-)

Here's # 4 piston. Not only a hole in it but, complete melted around the rim too.

a good piston for comparison...

# 4 cylinder sure had some heat build up. I think the valve seats held but, the head and all the valves around # 4 are heat scored pretty bad.

If the walls are not scored then you should rebuild it. It isn't rocket science. You have gone this so just get what you need and put it back together, no need to replace the whole thing if you only need the hardware for one cylinder.

Get the head redone to make sure the #4 seat are good, replace the #4 valves, injector, piston and rod. Clean the pan and stack back together. You are already planning on a new turbo so all will be well with the world.

#4 is ate up pretty bad. I didn't examine it throughly but, the one place I did feel it was pretty bad.

Jake and Andy ......If #4 needs to be bored, wouldn't I want to do all of them. It seems if i had a bigger piston in one cylinder, it would throw it all off. I' can do this work but really don't know the particulars. According to the service manual, the cylinders can be bored twice before having to sleeve it.

Go ahead and yank the block outta there and have that thing bored out. Looks rebuildable from the photos.

yeah, I'd say it will be rebuildable. It's just a lot more work to do. I'll have to ship the block and head out to have it done. Man that won't be cheap !

I found a company that will ceramic coat the top of the pistons and teflon line the side. They claim it will help the pistons withstand over 2000 degrees. Between that and some fire rings.... I'll have a little more security against the heat.

If you didn't want to bore all of them you could just slieve #4 to bring it back to stock bore.
I my self would bore all of them.
