Well, yesterday I finally installed my EGT probe. I used the grease, drilled the 1/8 hole and then 3/16 then 5/16. I used my brand new dewalt bits with the pilot tip which I dont think was a good idea because they cut SO fast it left a good bit of chips I think. I then tapped it, cleaned the outside of the hole and then took a drill bit and stuck a magnet on it and gently moved it around the inside of the manifold, cleaned it off and repeated this until there was nothing sticking to it anymore. I then took the shop-vac and pulled the gas tank vent hose off my 4 wheeler and taped it to the pointed attatchment and ran that in the hole. Started her up after I installed everything it was fine. It was certainly a nervous process for me but I got it done. Typical egt's at idle are around 300-500 depending on if I am in drive and how long I have been driving, highest I have gotten it with pretty hard acceleration was about 1230, if the rpm's get up the temp drops to around 1100. I installed it pretty much where edge recommends except I put it maybe 1 inch farther towards the front of the truck so that any metal chips that fell would land on the bottom of the manifold tube instead of falling right into the turbo. I have pics but I left my camera in the truck.
Problem I have always had with them is they all of a sudden bite like a ****. First time I found that out was a few years ago drilling up through a cabinet, slowly, and it bit and came through so quick I didnt have time to move my hand.[:@]
After all the reading I did an dbelieve me...I did a TON of reading, post turbo really only serves one purpose, turbo cooldown. Bring it on over mayfair, I will do it for ya!
That's exactly whatI want it for, turbo cool down. My truck isn't bombed and I don't really plan on bombing it either. I want to know when it's safe to shut er down after towing.
