How bad is your fuel mileage while towing?
When pulling my 37' 5'ver, which dry weight is around 15,800 plus the 4 passengers, 84 gallons of fuel, and the assorted camping stuff .........I imagine I'm pushing the scales around 17,500 lbs. ( I hope that the Dodge Warranty Division isn't reading this! ) I get on flat gound here in the south about 11.5 to 12 MPG driving between 62 and 65 MPH. Thats fiqured with the lie-o-matic overhead puter. One day I need to put a pencil to it, and also vist a roadside truck scales. It will likely either impress me, or scare me!!
I got 16.8 MPG towing 5.5K lbs (tandem axle trailer w/ 1980 malibu) coming back from Gallup NM to SLC, which was a lot worse than the 23 MPG I got on the same trip without the trailer, but not too bad.

What if you ARE overweight, can they stop you from continuing your trip?

Just curious, all those who are hand calculating mileage, what do they compare to the computer? I remember when I first got mine that it would read a little high, then I put on the cold air intake and it read low...
I hand calculate the mileage. Empty, the meter is only about 1mpg off. Loaded, it was 2-3 over what I was getting. And the scales on the side of the hiways are to check if the big rigs are over weight. They will call you inside to check your license and permits or to check your log book. Commercial vehicles are only allowed to drive for 11 hrs. per day in a 14 hr. period.
I hand calculate mine andthe lie-o-meteralmost always 2 to 3 mpg off. I alwaysfill to same spot in the neck so I know exzactly how much fuel is used.
