Adjusted my valves
For a while now, when my truck was idleing, I could hear what sounded likea loose valve making a tapping noise. So I decided to check and adjust the valves today. The manual says that regular valve adjustment isn't necesssary, but I don't see how that is possible. So with 59K on the clock, I adjusted the valves.
I found that all were within the.006-.015" spec on the intakes and .015-030" on the exhaust, except for the #2 intake which was about .020". So I reset it to .010" and now the noise seems to be gone, just the regular injector noise
Who else has checked their valve adjustment? It's pretty easy.

I would recommend that everyone adjust their valves at 80k. I did mine then. Didn't see if they were in spec, but it definatly quieted the engine down. Did you adjust all back to spec, or just the one?
The manual says that if they are within tolerance, there is nothing to gain by adjusting them. But then again, it also says periodic adjustment isn't required.
Mine were all within .003" of what I would have set themto anyway (except the one), so for me it probably would have been a waste of time to actually adjust them all.
I have always had VWs, and those require valve adjustments every 3000 miles. I think I will make valve adjustment part of my 50,000 mile maintenance from now on.

Maybe someone should do a writeup for everyone. I just did mine but can go throughthe motions and take pics if there is enough interest (anyone let me know if your interested!). After doing mine, I would say at least do the initial adjust at 60k then every 75-80k afterward.
Cummins uses solid lifters so you'll have to have a valve adjustment sometime. Most of the steps on my engine will apply to yours. Well see how time goes next weekend and I'll post up a diy.
Super...glad to hear yur a braver man than I when it comes to these trucks..
I had mimne adjusted a couple months ago. dropped $100, but the mechanic did the work right in front of me. now I now the "how to" of adjusting.
it did quiet the chatter a lot!!!
with the 12 v, you turn the alt pulley and rotate the engine backwards. reverse roation does not hurt the engine. then you start at cyl 1, then work your way around.
now my 93 has 6 valve covers, and 6 gaskets....more fun!!!

I haven't done mine yet and I don't know if my pop ever did either. Take a bunch of pics, do a write up, and we could pop it up top under a DIY section.
A CTD valve adjustment should not be any different than any other valve adjustment. a DIY writeup for those who could use it is an awesome idea and was on my DIY writeup list for things to do... someone beat me to it... please!
