Choice: New diesel or '06 5.9 w/10K
Need to get a Dodge one ton diesel for towing a fifth wheel. But I'm a bit leery of the new engines.
Here's the choice: A loaded quadcab 2007 3500 4X4 dually with the new diesel for about $44K after rebate. Or a loaded 2006 with the 5.9 that I found. It is configured the same EXCEPTforNO 4-wheel drive. Price is $36K.
Both are leather, nav system, longbed, etc.
I don't think the 4 wheel drive is mandatory for the intended application, so that might not be a sticking point.
This probably comes down to a question of wether a person trusts the new engine or not. What would you do?

the 5.9 will pull anything you put behind it. . .right now the largest problem with the 6.7's is the exhaust, and atleast dodge is owning up and trying to fix the problem, and being sucessfull for the most part.
it's realy a toss up. but the 6.7 comes with an exhaust brake standard, which will help ALOT

I'm sure the new 6.7 is great, but my neanderthal thinking says go with whats proven. You could always put that extra 8K you save into an exhaust brake, big-rig wheels and tires, larger exhaust, etc.
Thanks guys. You are confirming my thoughts. The 5.9 is probably the way to go. It would be nice to have the exhaust brake and 6 speed found on the new engine. But I think the reliability of the 5.9 will be even nicer.
WOW, tough call !!
My initial thought was that buying a 4wd is that way to go if for no other reason other than re-sale, however the 5.9 is a proven horse.
I'd go with the 5.9 only because most 1st runs tend to be buggy and people know that at resale time.
YEP .... go with the 5.9
Oh yeah, Welcome Aboard !!

5.9 for sure but the 4 wheel drive would kill it for me
i need it cuz i liek to wheel my truck as well as tow some stuff plus my truck will spin the tires alot when im pulling my car and trailer. and its wet out or snowy
the 4 wheel helps alot there. alot alot! plus the ease of just moving the stick in and out when ever i please
not just being stuck with 2 wheel. id also never go with the shift on the fly button i always go with manual engagement because thats just me
