Default Hard Starting???

Hey guys, I need some input about my problem..I have a 1995 3500 with the Cummins..When the truck sits for a little while, and then I try to start it, it will start ..then stall immediately..I need to keep my foot on the peddle to keep it running, after 30 seconds or so, the motor smoothens right out, and then the truck will start like normal...Any Ideas?????????? I hate to bring it to a garage for the problem, especially if it is something stupid...All input is greatly appreciated

Thanks
Steve

Sounds like your losing prime. Have you got a fuel pressure gauge?

I'd say your mechanical pump is about shot. . .you shouldnt loose prime like that. they are simple to replace and are located on the back half of the engine on the drivers side. heald in with two bolts and is run off the camshaft.

it's easy to replace. . .you just have to watch the pin that is inside the block and make sure it is lined up with the lever.

as far as cost. . .I'm not sure. it shouldnt be too much.

Check the fuel pressure relief valve on the injector pump. It's hel on with a banjo bolt on the top, front portion of the pump. If that valve fails in the open position (which they do when they get to be as old as ours), the lift pump has a hard time delivering fuel to the injector pump.

Try this, next time you start the truck, slightly press down on the accelerator as you start it. If it turns right over, I would suspect that valve. It's about $60-80 and takes 30 seconds to change.

Good luck with your ride.

Check your overflow valve, and you return fuewl line. More thn likely it is your return fuel line where it goes behind the fuel filter. Dodge used some regular rubber hose when they connected the 2 metal hard lines. This hose that they used starts to detiriate over time and will cause an air which will cause the problems that you are having. This hose is a pain to replace, but I am about 95% sure that it is your problem.
