savage.basher what dealer does a oil change on a diesel for50 bucks??
I know right!!! I thought it was cheap too. After tax it is like 52.60 or something. As soon as I get home from vacation I will get the last receipt and take a pic too show you. I think if I bought the oil and the filter it would almost cost that much without the labor. Funny thing is I don't thinnk they are giving me any kinda special deal because I bought the truck from a different dealer. It is Federico Crysler Dodge in woodriver IL. Even walmart charges like 89.99 or something.

My dirty air filteris going tocost me $10-12K. The filter was very clogged and actually bent towards the intake. The lack of air appearantly blew out (or sucked in) all the internal seals, causing the oil to be burned off and destorying just about everything.
Wait a second, even if the filter was clogged I don't see how it could do that. The system goes into the cylinders, which see a ton of pressure and are designed to hold air and other hot gasses. I guess it could do something to the turbo on the intake side, but that is it. Going through the piping, intercooler, and intake manifold there are no seals that would touch oil and going through the valves shouldn't cause any problems. The piston rings should be able to take a little bit of vacuum just fine as they hold the massive pressure of combustion and are a piece of steel in groove, after that it is compression and then the pressures would all be positive again, not to mention if the turbo was still working then you had positive pressure after the turbo anyway. I would ask them what "all" the internal seals are. I'm not an expert, so maybe one of the guys that knows more will come correct me, but to me it just doesn't make sense how a dirty air filter could ruin "all" the internal seals in the engine.

I haven't studied turbos...yet, but is the intake side seal put in there so it would be on the positive pressure side of the compressor wheel? If the seal is on the side that is higher pressure and you were getting boost it would still be under positive pressure and not vacuum, probably a little lower boost than normal, but if you still had power you were getting enough boost that it should still have been just fine. Drew or Jake?

I used to go to lagrange all the time. . .thats where the wife went to college and a bit over an hour from the house. . .and if thats the dealer you took it to. . .I'm sorry, but you just got the raw end of a bad deal.

second I personaly believe the tech has his head up his @55 for saying a clogged filter would do that. I'm calling BS on that one.

is the engine damaged in any way??? and the best way to see if the turbo is the problem is to remove the exhaust down pipe and see if theres any oil in there. . .you will see it, then look on the compressor side of the turbo and see if there is any oil there too.

Thanks everyone for your help. The engine is damaged because is started knockng violently. It just started, no warning. We thought somethig had gotten up into the fan or fan belt. Drew, I'll start looking at it tomorrow when we get it home. I just couldn't believe if that was the problem, there's no warning light, no performance loss, nothing. Shouldn't the ECM read that there isn't much (or any) air getting into the system? Shouldn't it run hotter or loose oil or boost pressure?

Umm.. B.S.? So exactly how clogged was your airfilter because i couldn't imagine it being worse than my buddies (litterally caked in mud). My stock box filter was filled with water (luckilly the water didn't rip the turbo apart) and it didn't do anything like that. Soo... Ummm... I mean i can keep an eye on my oil and such and see if it does but i agree with drew. I think they're trying to save themselves from having to put a new engine in because you got a lemon. Well hopefully a lemon.

what pisses me off is how these dealerships feed off peoples missory. like it doesnt affect there wages if they replace the engine for some guy who is haveing problums. they are just genuine @ssholes. (not all dealers though)

I ment hopefully lemon meaning maybe it's not a continueing problem that they might have missed. That after a while will become more and more apparent. But I doubt it's that and it's probably a lemon.

first thing would be a loss of performance and more of a haze comeing from the exhaust since the truck is running richer.

how did the dealer say there wasnt any oil in the crank case. . .did they just pull the dipstick, or did they drain what the oil pickup couldnt get or what. . .

if you have any troubles getting home just gimme a hollar.

as far as shops. . .I have a few people you could get in contact with and see what can happen from it.

http://www.cumminsforum.com/and contact member WAP13. he is located in middle GA.

As drew said check your intake and your exhaust for oil. A dirty air filter could cause the compressor side on the turbo to leak. It may be too late to try another dealer if this one has already contacted cummins about this.

Update for everyone, they're telling me now my truck was underwater (off-road mud everywhere)and it threw a rod through the block. I'm still fighting but its not looking good.
