your way around that is to turn the truck on without cranking it. Do this once or twice to give the lift pump time to fill the filter housing. It will crank right up. That or just pour some fuel into the housing before closing it up.

I believe the only thing it will hurt if you don't add the fuel is your starter. Not that it hurts it but, it's more stressed cranking than needed.

Change it, turn toon (glow coil on).Turn off, then turn on and bump starter but don't start. Turn off again and turn on and start, it should be normal if your 01 is similar to the 03+ filter change.

another way to purge the system is there is a bleeder valve at the back of the canister. use a flat tip screwdriver to push the core in to bleed the air out.

You never stop learning. A bleeder valve in the back, who'd a thunk it.

this is only for the 2nd gens. . .the 3rd gen CP3 is able to bleed the air out much easier than the VP44.

Warning, do not do this!!! With the grid heater relay pulled take a can a wd40 and spray it into the air cleaner while someone is cranking.[:-]

but it'll work
Finny, just bump the starter, let the fuel pump run until it shuts off, bump the starter again ect. Push the bleeder in at the vp44 inlet when the fuel pump is running. Once fuel comes out, your ready to go.

Finny, just like everyone else said next time just turn key on, listen until most of the clicking goes away, turn off. I know on my 3rd gen u can hear the fuel pump pressurize the system when I turn the key on. Took me forever after I drained the fuel because my entire fuel system was dry. Filled my filter canister. Did it three or four times. Let it rest (wasn't sure if doing this over and over would overheat anything was just being cautious) came back too it. Tried to start it. Let the starter have at it for couple secs. Did it 3 or 4 times again. Let it rest. came back had the starter go at it again started too. then it didn't. Left. Came back did it again fired right up no sputters. Comforting sound hearing that cummins fire up and purr. Love it. Love the diesel smell too.

Oh I had jiffy lube change my oil and fuel filter before i went on my honeymoon. Pretty sure that it's something that I wouldn't do. but they put atf in the fuel compartment so the engine wouldn't loose prime. Not genius if it would hurt the engine or not. But I think I'll do all my own service's from now on. Not too keen on people putting stuff other than diesel and diesel additive in the fuel system.
"Well gee bob, I don't wanna make the customer unhappy if it doesn't start. Let stick some 30 weight in and that'll help it from loosing prime" Guiness motto. GENIUS!!! [X(]
