That is perfectly normal. That is the "black cloud of death" everyone talks about. What causes it is the air/fuel mixture. The black smoke is unused diesel, that is burned out the exhaust. If you get a chip, the smoke will really roll.

grey smoke could be a few things...

you might try changing the fuel filter for starters. You might also try running some fuel additives since the new fuel really lacks it lubrication. Also clean the air filter. A puff or two of greyish/white smoke is normal on a cold start but, you shouldn't be seeing any after that.

It's possible you have a bad injector or one going bad. If the smoke gets white, start looking in that direction. Another possiblity is your fuel pump. They're known to go bad within the miles you have. It would help if you had gauges to check see whats going on.

Mine did that on startup recently/. A little whit smoke and really rough idle for about 15 seconds. Added a quart of PS and ran the H#ll out of it the next day... No more rough idle and it runs like a top now.

I thought he was talking about the normal smoke, lol. Try the lucas in it. I run it everyonce in a while and it seemed to clear up everything and makes it run smoother.

It shouldn't blow any smoke sitting in neutral and reving the engine. When you take off from a stop there will be a little smoke, that is normal.
