I have a 2004 dodge ram 2500 4X4 Cummins diesel 5.9litre. Today a squeal sound started coming from belt area. to eliminate other things I pulled belt completely off and squeal was gone. I also noticed my belt being eaten or chewed away on the 1 side quite a bit as it was riding over more on the pulley than it should. I spun all accesories. AC was quiet, water pump quiet, ps pump quiet, idler quiet. Only 1 that made noise was the belt tensioner. It sounds rough. fan makes a lil noise but not much. Could it be just the tensioner? has any1 else encountered this and what was it?

 

replace the tensioner...mine went out and ate the whole belt!!!

otherwise, the squeel is pretty normal with a diesel on shut down.

 

Bad tensioner, replace it. Check to see if how much play is in the fan hub (try moving it side to side)

 

no play in anything. fan is good no play. only play and bearing noise in the tensioner. How much is a tensioner and belt roughly? I wonder if it would be covered under the LUBRICO warranty I have.

 

$65 or so at autozone..plus a new belt at about $25 or more!!!
