If you think you are sucking air, hook up an alternative fuel source to the inlet of your pump. If the problem goes away then you got an air leak somewhere on the sucktion side. You can also hook a clear plastic tube to the outlet line to the vp44 and bump the starter, a few times. if the fuel coming out that tube has air in it then you have an air leak or a restriction in the suction side.

Next question::: I was given a part number of 3937670RX from Cummins for the injector pump- what if I choose not to use a cummins part and want to go with Bosch or Lucas, how do i know what is compatible. Does anyone know the part numbers for other manufacturers that would match?
