Default 98 12V- Made Big Expensive Mistake

I found a 98 12-v 4x4 in cherry condition on 68K original. I paid top dollar for a truck that I thought would be my last truck. But I am just not happy with the performance. I had an old 95 powerstroke with 250K on it and the Ford will just run circles around my Cummins. The mechanic says it is just the way they are and thatit loses a lot ofpower in the automatic transmission. They did install a #10 Camplate and that helped with the power but brought my mileage down to around 11mpg.I could count on getting 17-18 on the Ford. I guess I am just venting my disappointment. Is it just the 12 valve engine?

somthing is definately wrong with your engine. there is no way that the 12v would not outdo a powerstroke.

That 12V should be able to run like fury all day long. In fact the 12V '98 is like the holy grail of CTDs since its the year they had both the 12V and 24V as an option. If I were you I'd PM Drew or DieselDemon and see if they have any ideas. I've got a '96 automatic in addition to my '00 and it gets about 22mpg just driving and 16 or so pulling.

yea, something aint right. . .you might need to get the timeing checked, she might be fireing late, and also make sure all your fuel filters are good. just remember there is a filter right at the P7100 pump.

if it is getting crappy fuel mileage and has no ***** then check for boost leaks, clean airfilter, and check for possible fuel leaks somewhere. I had a 98 club cab 4x4 with the 12 valve and got an easy 14.7 mpg towing a trailer that weighed about 2800 pounds all while leaking fuel from my return line.

Also just thought. the TC could be slipping really bad.

The torque convertor was replaced last month. Both the tranny shop (they said they have a lot of experience with Cummins) and the performance shop say that the truck is running like it should. Since I have never had experience with a Cummins or a 12valve before, I had to take their word for it.

No noticeable smoke. He told me he turned down the star wheel pretty low and that when I hook up the trailer that I may want to turn it to increase the power. He said he watches the plunger, but I forgot which way I want the plunger to go?

well all I can say about ur shop is that if they think that a powerstroke will outdo a 12v cummins when the CTD is running properly then I don't really think that you should ever and I mean ever take a truck back there again. you do need to check all your filters, timing, there are so many things that could be affecting ur power.
