Vibration in the Rearend
Trucks done it from day one. But when it hits about 75-80 there is a slight vibration coming from the rear end. I was told after i bought the truck, that it could be the tires. Just seeing if anyone has any other opinions. Not too worried about it. It goes away at about 85. Just curious to see if anyone had an idea.
I had a similar problem with my 2004.5 QC SB 2500. A slight vibration around 65-75 mph that would blur the rearview mirror. It wasn't the tires since I swapped rims/tires from a 2006. I removed the rear shaft (one piece, no carrier) and the U-joints seems OK. I finally fixed the problem by buying a new truck. Bingo, no vibration.
Mine did the same thing. Actually I've had to do it on three trucks lately. At around 70 or so it would vibrate in the rear end and it ended up being the u joints. Even though they may look good on the outside and seem to turn free it doesn't mean that they are ok. All that lines the inside of the cup are needle pins that can wear out pretty easy under load. Also, there probably isn't a grease zert so it hasn't been lubed since it came from the factory. I'd start there since its an easy job and will only cost around sixty or so to do yourself.
Symtom sounds like u-joints ,I would definetly them. Like said earlier it would be hard to tell if they are actually bad by looking at them, and they are really cheap and easy to replace. My bet is, that will fix the problem.
(In my case) Itwas the drive shaft angle from the rear tell housing of the trans. I had the same thing and it was fixed buy Dodge. The drive shaft on my truck was a half of a degree out of adjustment.
Half of a degree?!? I don't buy it. Please tell me what they did to "fix" the problem. Any real load that you put in your bed is going to change your drive shaft angle by more than that.

If you think about it a half degree is allot over distance. A half degree take off angle from the transmission over 10 - 12 feet is allot at the end. When I DO have my 5th wheel camper hooked up I DO HAVE a very little vibration on take off from a stop. It stops soon their after. Dodge had a memo sent out about this. That is why they knew to check it. When they did check it they told me and showed me the memo. They made the adjustment to the axle buy shimming the rear mount or "X" brace were it bolts to it for support. I went back after I hooked to my camper and told them of the slight vibration when I was hooked to my camper. And of course they told me the angle will and does change when a load is put on the truck. They said they could re-adjust it NOT to vibrate with a load but by doing that it may do it with out a load due to the change. I said leave it like it is because I drive with out a load a lott more than with one. Plus it only does it from a stop and just for a few seconds.
No way..... Ok so your telling me that no matter what your truck is going to have a vibration? So your telling all of the trucks I've driven with and without a load should have had a vibration! Come on man. I've driven trucks so loaded down that they were like low riders in the back end. And I've driven the same truck with medeoker loads. and same truck empty no vibration like that. Somethings messed up. Sorry to say it but I think they screwed u.
I don't "buy" it either, sounds a little rediculous to me, I don't think the angle of the drive shaft affects it at all, unless it is such an angle that the u-joints are binding, or I have also heard that if the drive shaft is perfectly straight it isn't good either (in the case of a muscle car or something, wherethe axle being straight/flatis actually a possibility).
