Since I am new to the Cummins family, I have a 01 that I mounted a service body on. My step father and brother have been cummins people for a long time, but I would like to know what oill to use in the new to me rig? I drive a lot of miles and was wondering if there is a extended change interval I could use? I will be buying the filter kit from Geno's (4 oil, 1 fuel, 1 air) ut want to make sure I am doing it right.

Any help would be great.

 

any 15-40 will do fine. . .and you could probably get away with around 7500mile oil changes.

or you can fill up with a synthetic, put in a bypass filter, do oil analysis and go for the better part of 25K. depending

 

If I was you I would use Amsoil AME 15W-40 synthetic heavy duty diesel oil and a high quality filter that uses synthetic media(Cummins Stratapore, Amsoil EA, or Donaldson Endurance). After 10,000 miles on that oil, draw a sample and send it in for an oil analysis. You should be able to go at least 15,000 miles on that oil, maybe more like 25,000 miles.

 

I recommend using Shell Rotella Synthetic. About $14 / gallon at Walmart.

My Ram has been running regular ole Shell Rotella T since the day it was born. The truck now has almost 125K on it. I change my oil and filter ( Fleetguard Strat )every 5000 miles.
