Default Front Brakes...

doing a brake pad swap tomorrow and want to know if anyone has yanked off the rotors off their 2500 yet to get them turned... the shop manual says they slide off and look like floating rotors, pic show's a 1500 setup... somehow I dont think it's that easy... or is it?

If its anything like the '00 they are floating rotors, but you have to take of the caliper bracket to get to the rotor. Mine needed a 12 point socket and a LARGE breaker bar to get the bolts out. Good luck.

3rd gen brakes are easy its the second gen that sucks. I did a brake job on my dads 99 and it ended up costing almost a 1000 by the time i was done the rotors froze up to the front hubs. This was before I heard about the pry bar trick and power steering.

SteveO, the caliper brackets are torqued to some ridiculous number like 250 lb/ft. Also I was reading in the service manual the other day that you need to replace the "anti rattle" springs and they are different from top to bottom. Let us know how it goes.

Steve, your rotors should not need turning unless the pads are down to the rivots. As long as there is no shimmy in the pedal I would not touch them. They machine the rotors on our trucks so close to tolerance there is not much to cut off of them. Take a wire brush on your drill and scuff em up b4 you put the new pads on. My 04 has a 110k on it and it still stops like it did new and Ive never turned the rotors. Good luck either way you decide to go.

I was going to play it by ear (the turning part), there is not warpage on them and I think taking sandpaper to them to rough them up should be good enough. I just did my wifey's toyota like that and it worked fine. Still, I'd like to pop them off just to see how hard it is when I go to upgrade to the powerstop setup.

thanks for the feedback guys... I'll let you know how it goes...

I just did mine on my 05, 3500 and it seemed easy. Rotors slid right off. There were a couple little retainer clips on every other stud (I think). If you can have those handy for the reinstall, they get destroyed coming off. I was excited to get 45k miles out of the fronts pads. My 99 we changed every 17k.

thanks for the heads up on the clips Max... I think the lugnuts should hold them on just fine if they are setup the way I think they are...
