Hey guys, I'm new to owning a truck with a diesel motor....I live in WV, so the winters here can be harsh. I was wondering what I need to do to my truck both before and during winter to take care of it....I don't have a block heater...

it has an anti gel for the winter months along with cetane boost (octane boost for diesel).

you can install a block heater.

let the rig warm up on cold mornins before pullin out.

 

yea anything involving opening hte hood is over my head.....lol. my buddy had an 02 model cummins and didnt have a block heater, he just let his warm up before driving it in the winter. even during the summer and fall i let my truck idle a minute or few before pulling out, and i let it idle about a minute before shutting it off. i was just told to do that, i dont know exactly the importance of letting it sit before shutting it off.....

 

Letting it run lets the motor cool off as well as the turbo. It helps prolong engine life as well as to keep your oil in a little better condition.

I think the block heater is only required if there are temps below is it -30???/ or something like that. eiether way a block heater is not very expensive to get sounds liek you are taking care of it tho so I wouldn't be worried.

 

yea we rarely get below 0 here in the middle of winter

 

mine fires up at -25 not pluged in mine has a trans pan heater ,block heater ,oil pan heater for the colder days
