I know what you mean. . .however right now it doesnt matter what your MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) is you are going to be MP(Multi Purpose) there are alot of computer possitions available and when your done you'll probably have your A+, Cisco, MCSE, NET+, and any other type of certification you need out of AIT. just becarefull of the recruiters for any branch, they will tell you all sorts of nice things that dont come true, so unless it's on paper, dont believe it.

as for me, I entered as a Wheel Vehicle Mech. my first unit cross trained me in track vehicle, HAZ MAT, AMMO, Fuel, and Vehicle Recovery. My next units had me working on Communications from RF to Sat comms since I had a strong electronics background from college. my next unit cross trained me in Futility. the unit I am in now has me doing everything Ive done in my previous units. I am also a Civilian Technician for the Guard. I work on Electronics Equipment, dealing 80% of my time with Radiological and Chemical Detection Equipment(I do have Certifications for this as well), the other 20% is with multimeters, o-scopes, counters, torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers and what-not.

To put it short, I am in no way doing what I initialy came in to do, but I dont mind, I make more money indoors.

My GT score is a 107. I need 3 more points so I can submit my packet for Warrant Officer School. I took the ASVAB back when I was a Junior in HS and pretty much just blew off the test. but thats not too bad for just going ABACADABA

As a former 74B (that is Army computer geek for you guys & btw anyone who's gonna go talk to a recruiter it is 25B now) AIT does not give you the qualifications to get your certs. CCNA isn't a full class until you go to BNOC (that is the school for the E-6 promotion for some of you). Yes while your in you can work your tail off and get all the certs; if you can get your unit to pay for them. There are new education benefits that allow you to take exams and stuff at a cut rate (which adds up FAST when doing IT tests). I believe the required GT score for 25's is still 110.

As a 25 in today's Army you WILL be supporting computers. You will be doing everything from desktop to server / network support. Everything is hooked to a bit or byte now. You wont however be witting software; that is what contractors are for (yeah I was one of those too; there are even better stories for that topic). Evey as long ago as it was (and no I'm not going to answer that question) I was in I am still using stuff everyday that I learned when I was a green suiter. Some of the IT stuff they use is pretty cool; most is general every day COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) stuff so it crosses right over w/ no additional work.

Savage if you really are thinking about joining up and want to talk about doing IT stuff for "ol'Uncle Sam" let me know. I've still got many friends in uniform today in the field. I'll hook you up w/ an email address or two.

Go Navy....and see the world while you learn and compute! College classes on board a ship, sea pay, exotic ports of call, what more could you ask for?

The certs you gin in AIT (Advance Individual Training; where you go after basic to get qualified in your MOS) are "Army" certifications. To get the actual certs you still have to take the industry tests (like ASE; you get training in the Army but you still gotta take the real test) and the Army isn't qualified to insue those.

We used to arrange group testing when I was in. We'd get a bunch of the Bravo's together and then call a Microsoft or Cisco testing center and have them drive up on post and do a test. But that was before all the new programs. Now-a-days there are certified testing centers in most of the larger posts ED or ACAP centers. The kids have is so much easier these days. Heck a budy of mine just took most of his MSCE in Baghdad

And apparently that's all you need to be a ford diesel mechanic.
way off base...that's all you need to be a cummins mechanic. to be a ford mechanic you need an IQ of 190+...25 years of diesel experience...a degree from MIT. in order to fix a ford correctly, you gotta have your **** together
