That is one smart dog you have Savage..

On topic, here in Broward Cty Florida, you msut state that you have a Pitbull as if you don;t and they find out, you will lose your insurance and any premiums paid. I am not sure about other "aggressive dogs" but I also know that some dogs are considered to be "Low Tech" safety for the house and can actually reduce your home owners insurance and also be a tax right off for the food and treatment.

My homeowner's insurance guy asked me if I had a pit or chow. I don't remember him asking about any other breeds.

My insurance company is tricky... randomly they send letters out to let us know that a certified inspector will be inspecting the condition of my exterior and roof. I am sure that while they are looking at the roof, they'll also be using it as an excuse to not assume the risk foranything else thatthey find. (i.e. aggressive dogs)

Also, that if I wanted to take advantage of it, they offer a "free" complete inspection of the home. They would reduce my premium another 5%, I think, if I passed the inspection and had remote monitored fire/smoke alarm with sensors on all windows and doors.

My house is 65 years old... I passed on their offer.

I have a Jack Russell, which is the smartest dog I've ever had. Too smart for his own good! I also have a rottt/pit mix and a Presa Canario which are very good guard dogs. No problems with insurance yet.

When we moved in to our new house the insurance company asked about the breed of our dogs (Labs). Pits and such ae higher risk, therefore you pay higher premiums. You might want to check your policy to see if there is a clause that talks about dog breeds, requirements for reporting them etc. What you don't want to happen is have a claim, then find out that the claim is denied because you did not report your dogs to the company.

Also someone else made the best suggestion. Make sure you get the dog obedience training. You'll be happier as a dog owner plus reduce the risk of an unruley dog biting someone.

Good Luck, Glenn

I was trying to break Hook of peeing in the house, so I bought a nice big plastic dog crate to lock him in while I was at work...first day, locked him in it with his food and water...came home and found him laying on the couch with the crate in pieces on the floor...he ate it! He even ate the metal door. I guess I never should have told him the story of the 3 little pigs when he was a puppy. He thought he was the big bad wolf!

by any chance do you have nationwide??? because this is why i'm worried about it. they do that as well and the last time they did they sent us a letter about our trampoline and that we had 30 days to fence it, remove it, or our homeowners insurance woudl be dropped. let's just say my dad was pretty pissed off because they weren't coming out to do what they said they were looking for stuff to change the policy. I will see but my parents don't have an issue with me getting the dog in fact my dad wants me to get one. I've thought about a lab and a husky as well as a few other breeds but that shepherd just keeps getting my attention somehow.

No, not Nationwide... I think all of the insurancecompanies in Texas do it. Some more agressively than others.

bottom line in my opinion, if it's the dog you want, then get it. I would however talk to your insurance carrier to see what they say, as somebody said earlier, you could run into some major issues if something happens and the insurance company was not aware of it.

I know there is some sort of public certification course that you can run your dog through to get a "good citizen" type document which may help.

Good luck....
