Hourly. And thank god for that, warrenty don't give you crap to do it. Actually I can get close to warrenty times on some of them because I've done them at least 2 dozen times.

I went through welding first. Then got an associate through a John Deere Tech program at a junior college. While there, I took auto, auto/diesel, and electrical classes. I liked the job at a Deere shop after school. It just didn't pay enough as being a union electrician where I work at now. So I use all of my tools at home. Thus, I started PerformanceAg at my shop at home and never looked back. I guess, what I am saying by all this is that you should go through some sort of school just to build confidence. Then you can go on from there

From my experience, school will get your foot in the door, thats it. It familiarizes you with some of the stuff you'll see in the shop. However it won't teach you jack about doing your job. If your smart, and quick to learn you'll do fine. The biggest thing is the boss has to be able to trust you and the work you do. If your very dependable you'll go far quick. Heck it took them 8 months from the day I walked in the door till they had me doing rebuilds and such by myself. The boss had never had anyone as young as me before ever touching the guts of engines before (just turned 20 at the time). Anyone can change oil for a living, you take pride in your job and you'll get to do the fun jobs (for methat's engine work).

Only on basic principle of operation. I did know quite a bit about gas engines from being around cars, trucks, chainsaws, lawn mowers, tractors and such. Heck by the time I went to school I had rebuilt several briggs and strattons, a ford 2.3l 4cyl turbocharged, and two chevy's (305 and a 350).

Finny if ya want to work on a diesel engine to get your feet wet
It would be a lot cheaper to find a tractor to rebuild , and recondition.
A buddy of mine did this in AGED , by the end of his senior year he sold and
paid his truck off. Think about that.
