Default 07 2500 diesel A/C-Heater crunch

Please tell me this is normal.

First time diesel owner. In the summer, once you turn on the A/C there was a "crunching" sound coming from beneath the hood. I asked the dealer, they said the noise was normal

But now that it has gotten cold here in Utah, when I turned on the heat the other day, it made the same noise.

What is making that noise and it is normal?

I can't say for certain if I had defrost on. But I don't think I would have had it set on defrost during the summer. But I will pay attention.

At fist I thought making sure I shut the blower off before I shut down the engine would help, but the other day I was driving and just truned the blower on, without the A/C on and it made the noise. Prior to that I thought it might be related to the A/C compressor, but that was not the case.

When X-actly does it do it? is it when you turn on your fan or when you change your "area" that the air comes out of (can't think what thats called)

Does it only do it just shortly after you start the truck?
My 04.5 does that, it's just the A/C clutch engaging.

When I first noticed it in the summer, I had the A/C on, so it happened shortly after starting the truck.

The other day, the fan was off, I drove about a mile, applied the heater fan and "crunch." Once it has done it, it does not do it again when I either increase or decrease the amount of air blowing.

Hum I'll play with mine today, if I hear something I'll let ya know...Sounds like its just the compressor engaging but since its doin it with the heater i assume your a/c compressor is off, may just be your fan kickin in I know its loud when you put it on high! I usually have the radio louder than the exhaust, i'll take it easy and see what happens

the A/C compressor will cycle any time the defroster is on. my 04 has been making that racket for 116k. I've not heard of anyone having trouble other than the noise. When I first heard it I thought it was gonna fly out from under the hood. I even pulled over and started checking. [:@]It is nothing to be concerned over, Just drive the snot out of er and let it CLANK!! Good Luck and HAPPY MOTORING

Mine only does it the first time the clutch engages for the day, sometimes it doesn't even do it at all. I figured it was dying the first couple times it did it, but it's still going strong. If it does quit, then I'll replace it ;-)
