On a pre-turbo pyro guage--at 1300 you need toback out of the throttle or risk damage. Short durations of a couple seconds are O.K. but don't go up a hill pulling a trailer that hot or you might not make it to the top.
Post turbo--about 1000 is the max you want to see.
the VP44 engines and the old 12 valves are not built like the 3rd gen HPCR's and do not have valve seats or the right valves to help with the heat. . .both of these I wouldnt want to go over 12-1300F for long or you will melt a valve. now I know some guys will run EGT's up above 1500F, but that is asking for trouble. the HPCR's can handle 1350 all day long without problems. . .but that is about as high as I would feel safe.
