A local gas station is now selling 5% biodiesel. Since we haven't had it available before now, I haven't really paid attention to any talk about it. So, what are people's thoughts on the stuff? Specifically, I live in Idaho and it can get real cold, any gelling concerns vs standard #2 diesel? Is the lubricity any better with bio? Fuel milage any different?

lubricity is way better... I ran b20 in my '05 and it ran much smoother, mileage didnt seem to be affected at all. cant comment on the gelling question since I dont have access to it here in CA...

 

better lubrication. . .however it will gell quicker. . .keep a bottle of Power Service 911 handy and you'll be ok when the temps drop.

straight #2 has a cloud point of around +10-0F, the winter blended crap gells around -20F. BIO gells at higher temps if not mixed with diesel.

 

I have been running it in mine for 6 months and it runs better, is cheaper and don't have to add any additives to the fuel. The tempuarter has not gone below 30 degrees so I can't comment on the gel issue. The more regular diesel it is mixed with, the lower the gel point. With B5, you are probably not looking at much of a difference. Because for every 20 gallons of B5 you buy, 19 gallons is regualr diesel and 1 gallon is bio.

 

Thanks for the info. I'm going to give it a whirl.I would like to see higher bio numbers just because I think for the most part it is a win-win situation. Perhaps in the future more gas stations will start to carry it.

 

That's exactly why I have switched over.

 

And B5 is OK for warranty. You will notice a quieter engine.

 

I've been running B20 for about 3,000 miles I haven't really noticed a difference in driveability or mileage... it's about $0.25 cheaper than standard #2 so I'm happy.

 

Straight WVO and mixture for me is working great. Just can not wait for spring time when the weather warms a bit.

 

you guys & b20 are lucky... the nearest place for me is 60 mi away.
