Default Time for shocks

Well it's that time. I had a bad bushing on one of my front shocks so I thought I'd change it out. Well when I got the top not off there was no resistance from the shock- up or down. I bought the truck used so I don't know how many miles these have on them but ti could explain the extremely crappy ride. That and I don't know how much of a lift it has from stock.

Do you guys have any thoughts on shock brands? It has Skyjackers on it now, but thought I would ask since I haven't been into 4x4's for long.

It doesn't see much off roading, yet. I do tow a 21' pontoon boat in the summer but that's about it.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I've heard nothing but good things about Billsteins so far. I'd go that route. Geno's carries them now.

I just threw some bilsteins on mine and I like them. My front shocks were like yours with very little resistance. The ride improved some and so did the handling.

Realistically, how long should a set of Bilsteins last? Best guess is that I've got over 100k miles on mine. Mostly highway, some offroad but nothing crazy. The bushings are clearly history, but I suspect the valves and so forth have surpassed their intended life, too...

Most likely, you'll never have to change them again.
The OE Cofaps are junk. They don't seem to make it to the first oil change.
I know the Power Wagons come stock with bilsteins, and they made my truckride much, much better. There are more expensive shocks around, but very few that are really better.

This topic has risen before, and though I haven't changed mine yet, a large concensus here supports bilsteins. I'm pushing 48k miles on the stocks, and will likely go with the bilsteins at the time of the tire/rim change out.
Has anyone experienced difficulty changing out these shocks? Just wondering.......
