Default 12V power port vs. cig lighter

My truck has one 12V power port on the right side of the dash and the cig lighter on the left. I was thinking it is not recommended to plug accessories (phone chargers, gps, etc) into the cig lighter port. Is this correct? I wasn't sure if the cig lighter has the same fuse and amperage as the power port. I have another power port plug I can put in to replace the lighter port but didn't know if it would work correctly. Anybody changed one out or have any input on useage?

Either one works fine. On my truck the power port is always hot, while the cigar lighter is only hot when the key is on.

No, you can plug things into the cig lighter port. I think the only difference is it is switched so if something needs continuous power, you wouldnt want to use it.

If you want to change the power port to hot only with the key on, it can be done just by moving a fuse over.

Oh all can be used for power, but only the ligher is made to take the heat from the lighter element

Not 100% sure that it can be done on a 2005, would have to look at a fuse box to be sure. But on new models, open the power distribution box that is under the hood. In the top corner nearest to the windshield, look for a fuse that is labled "batt/ing". There are 3 slots side by side. The fuse sits in 2 of these slots. moving the fuse to the 2 slots marked "batt" will leave the power on all the time. If its in the slots marked "ign", the power will go off when the key is off...

Thanks guys. That helps a bunch. I'll just pull the cig lighter "handle" out and put on the cap from theextra power port I have to keep debris out and use it whenneeded.

Thanks again.

Now if Dodge would just put a auto switch on their headlights and make it where when you turn your wipers on your headlights come on since it's law in some states that when your wipers are on you must have your lights on that would be the cats *** to me.

This may actually be possible on your truck. I know that it is possible on some of the cars. It may be an option that can be enabled by the STAR scan. Not sure but will check tomorrow at work...
