OT-Health Insurance Rant
Alright, so today I got in all my stuff to finally get set up with health insurance at my new dealership. Well after figuring it all out its gonna cost me nearly $200 a month for it! thats almost 3 times what I paid at my previous job! I mean its decent coverage, not like super great or anything, and its that exspensive? I don't get it. I mean is it just me or does that seem high. And it is only insurance for me too.
Is that individual or family coverage? For family that's not bad. You were just lucky at your last job. For individual that might be a bit much.
We are lucky we are double-covered. Have medical through the hubbies retirement and that is pretty cheap; but it is just medical. I cover all three through my work and it is right around that price also. My sister works for a small bank and pays almost double that. They had a bad year a couple years ago; multiple cases of cancer, a handful of heart attacks, an organ transplant. Their insurance costs tripled in one year.
You gotta remember that it is really a big group pool that you're paying into. The employer buys x# of units of coverage for y type of coverage. You then have to pay a share of it; even if you don't use it all.

No its just individual coverage. And I mean yeah I really don't have a choice, I've already gone 3 months without health insurance and am not doing it anymore. I just wasn't expecting it to be so high.
Consider yourself lucky.
I pay a little over $100.00 a WEEK for "worst case coverage". Basicaly what that means is that if I'm riding along and my head get's chopped off by a bus, they'll sew it back on and not take my house. However I have a $1000.00 a year deductable, meaning, last month when I needed a doctors note to continue boxing and the good doctor also saw need for blood work, not only did I pay out of pocket for the visit, but I'm still currently paying off the $600.00 blood work bill. Once again, I'll refer you to watch Michael Moores movie Sicko. You may or may not agree with his viewpoint, but it's a pretty eye opening movie to say the least.

Ha! $200 I wish [
]. Don't get me started with the absurd costs of health care. Try $875 per month. Granted that's for a family but considering that I started out 5 yrs ago @ 1/2 that for the same coverage [:@][:@][:@][:@].

$465/mo for family coverage here... BUT that includes NO maternity coverage, NO prescription coverage, NO office visit co-pays, and the deductible is something like $7,500. That's the cost of being self-employed these days.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as Mayfair... I'm covered if my legs accidentally come off, but then just enough for someone to sew them back on and send me on my way with a generic aspirin. It's ridiculous.

There are other options, I have a policy directly with United (Humana and others also offers this) :

Since the policy isn't through work, I don't have to worry about that when I change jobs. Unfortunately, as a Software Developer that happens a lot due to contract positions, etc. You can contribute to a Health Savings Account which unlike Flexible Savings, the money rolls over year to year and when you retire if you haven't used it, you can convert it to an IRA. I pay $150 a month for the coverage (with a $1800 annual deductible but 100% coverage after that) and contribute $200 a month to the Health Savings Account. It may not work for everyone, but its an option.

I used to pay 200 a month for me an my daughter. I swtiched jobs for less pay at first, knowing i would make more later. It turned out to not be a cut at all. I pay 50 a month for full coverage ins for us both now.
