Default Pitman arm problems... (steering upgrade)

tried drilling from underneath, no-go.. ok so I'll yank the arm... right... pitman arm puller #1 slips off the arm so on to #2 (conventional type)... doesnt fit. grind grind grind, now it fits. put some pressure on it and nothing, wont budge. next up, heat. but I dont want to damage the seals in the steering box, anyone with heat duration recommondations? for something that should take 1.5 hours to install... this is dragging on way too long. I should be hiking right about now [:@] (plan was to finish it up & take louie hiking)

tension with puller and BFH... they are hard to get off, BFH will work. Smack the side of pitman arm at the sector shaft as puller has tension, ought to break it free. What I had to do when I installed my lift.

Oh!! and no need to cushion BFH blows with fingers or thumbs. [sm=insomnia.gif]

I feel your pain steve05 !! I too am battling the pitman arm right now. I broke the first puller and modified the hell out of a 2 jaw puller. That sucker won't budge!!
I give up, I am putting it back together and taking it to a shop to let them install the lift. I don't have proper tools for the job and I am all out of nuckles!!

dang if you were close enough I may be able to snag the 20 ton hydraulic puller we have at work. works just like a press but uses a ram to yank stuff. . .quite fun to use on just these things.

BTW, it uses shop air to run the pump for the ram

well the arm is still on the truck [:@] I decided to fix puller #2 by opening up the weak 6mm bolt holes to 3/8 and retaping them so they are stronger... that's what busted the last time. In the process I ended up picking up a ryobi drill press so I can properly drill the holes for tapping. I will also need the press for drilling out the pitman arm from what I'm told. anyways, i'm done for the day. tomorrow night I'll put the drill press together assuming I get back from Reno soon enough (summit racing is in reno... giddyup) I promised the wifey I'd take her to Cabella's (sp?) tomorrow in search of a table for the back yard.
