block series
i looked today to see if my 01 had the dreaded 53 block in it and believe that the numbers on it were 55. it was really hard to see. if there is a 55 series are there any known weaknesses or problems that i should be aware of? Thanks a lot for any help!
nope. . .I believe 53's were the only ones with the issues, I do believe 54-56's are also made in brazil just like the 53's, however those are the newer revisions that have a thicker wall.
the blocks made in brazil have numbers you can see quite well. however there were some blocks made in mexico. the casting number on the block is very small and generaly unable to be read. the casting of these blocks have proven to be considerably stouter than the brazil cast blocks. BTW, the mexican blocks are also considerably heavier.

Code 53 blocks came in 99 and 00 model years. The blocks tend to crack on the rear passenger side.
