Default Carter Fuel Pump Problem

A guy here at work bought a 2001 with a CTD last thursday. Over the weekend it became hard to start. It blows white smoke while trying to start and eventually starts. He took it to a shop down the street from work and they said that it has 2 lift pumps. The old carter pump AND one in the tank. They said the pump in the tank is weak.

His dual pump setup is not like mine. The 2 pumps are hooked up in series and it appears that the in-tank pump was pushing fuel through the dead carter pump. Has anyone heard of this? Did he buy the truck from some half-*** that left the old pump on there when upgrading to the in-tank pump, or is this a common practice? Doesn't make sense to me to leave the old one on there. When mine was upgraded, the old one was removed.

Sounds like someone did the install the wrong way for sure. I never heard of it being installed that way.

Are you converting him over to your dual pump setup system now or what?
