Old Cummins into Newer Truck
Help, please!
I am considering taking the Cummins diesel from my 1991 D250 Ram and installing it into a donor 2001 Ram (gas presumably) - trans and all.
My question is: WILL IT FIT? Speaking of motor mounts specifically. I realize there will be a ton of other stuff that needs to happen, but I'm primarily concerned with knowing whether the mount points are the same between those years/engines, etc.
Has anyone of you ever done this.
...the old girl is just rusting away and it's just not safe to drive anymore. But the engine is great!
Any words of advice will be appreciated
Thanks,
Peter

I know that the 2001's came with diesels, so it'll fit, but what's involved I have no idea. I'm sure there is a TON of wireing that you'll hafta do as well as possible a different rad support because now you'll need room for an innnercooler, but either way they're both 2nd gens right? The parts I would think sould just carry over.
Sorry ... not quite sure. Welcome aboard though !!

it would be one hell of a lot of work to do. your best bet since the bodys are different would be to find an 01 that you could just look at and get some measurements. then you would know for sure if it was worth it and how much work it would take in the way of moving things around and possibly even having to make new motor mounts.
Thanks for the points. 91 is 1st generation, 01 is 2nd. I would guess that the donor truck is a 1500, though I'm not sure. I need this truck to plow snow, haul hay and pull around a small horse trailer.
The 91 just isn't safe anymore and I'd hate to let that engine go to waste, besides I need to replace it with something as cheaply as possible. I don't mind the work, so long as I know that it can actually be done.
One of the problems I seem to be having is that I need to find a cheap body/chassis from somebody who has blown their motor. Typically, it's the other way around - truck has been totalled in a wreck, but the drivetrain is still good.
Anybody know of anyone who has a 2500+ Ram with a blown engine that wants to get rid of it? I'd need it to be fairly well complete, though, especially if it's a 2nd generation - tall order, I know.
Failing that, what's a good running 1991 5.9L I6 Cummins turbo diesel engine worth? Comes nicely mounted to a set of wheels that can get you where you need to go, but is nearing the end of its useful life.

I'm not sure where your located or how much money you want to spend, but there are some nice looking 1st gen 4x4 rigs on AutoTrader. I like this 3500, it'd be perfect for your farm use. Here's a gasser with a dump bed and plow setup.
You could then keep the ol' girl as a parts and project truck.
