Agreed... if your not willing to slow down to save on fuel, dont complain about the cost of it...

Well, not saying this to you personally but, if that's how people are going to feel about it. Driving slower takes to much time, stop crying about fuel prices. Drive fast, and pay more. Just don't cry about it.
Thank you al5608!!!

When people go blazing by me on the highway it just shows me that they are willing to pay that high price for fuel and they have ZERO RIGHTS to whine about the high prices!

but you are only comparing 55 to 65, not 85 like most will travel on a 1000 mi trip. if you have a week or less off of work and need to make a 1000 mi trip to destination and a 1000 mi back, that time really adds up
As for time... You going to complain about 2 hours??? Geez... Get out of bed 1 hour earlier and got to bed 1 hour later... (Roll eyes)

As for the state of Idaho there is only 2 interstate highways. One way up north of me (~180 miles to I-90) and one way down south of me (~125 miles to I-84). In both case it's the only interstate highways in Idaho that are 75 MPH speed limit. Nowhere in the state is there speeds above this legally... So all my local roads here vary from 15 (residential areas), 25 (in towns), 35 (in larger towns), 45 (windy grades), 55, and 65 MPH tops...

So there is no way for me to legally get data on any speeds above 65 MPH...

To give an idea 85 MPH @ 10 MPG (thoerical numbers)

1,000 miles / 85 MPH = 11.76 Hours to travel
1,000 miles / 10 MPG =100.00 Gallons of fuel required
$4.00 gallon x100.00 Gallons =$400.00 Total Cost

and 55 MPH is 18 MPG

1,000 miles / 55 MPH = 18.18 Hours to travel
1,000 miles / 18 MPG =55.55 Gallons of fuel required
$4.00 gallon x55.55 Gallons = $222.20 Total Cost

18.18 - 11.76 = 6.42 Hours longer
100.00 - 55.55 = 44.45 Gallons Saved
$400.00 - $222.20 = $177.78 Dollars Saved...

$178.00 Dollars is a big enough saving to make me slow down... In3,370 miles I could buy a new set of injectors for my truck with the money I saved by driving slower... Not to mention its much safer...

parts of I10 in Texas is posted 80mph

Mopar73 anyway to set up a gasser with a "low idle" like 350 rpm, it kills me how much gas is wasted just in drive throughs, I'll shut my truck off or go inside. But a lot of places in SA you're in stop and wait then go 5mph and stop again so if theres a way to have a low idle that would save me a lot.

Wow! 80 MPH thats insane...

That because no matter what you do with a gasser the computer always aims for a prefect 14.7:1 fuel air ratio. So even when your coasting the air/fuel mixture still needs to remain 14.7:1 ratio so even though you coast or idling you'll always be pumping fuel in the cylinders on a gasser. Like on my Mom's 1996 gasser is consumes about1 to2 GPH at idle. But if you could reduce the idle down you would idle so rough and unstable that it would beat itself to death and the oil pressure would be extremely low. But remember it still has to be 14.7:1 ratio even at 350 RPM's

But a diesel is a different story. Diesel engines require a very small amount of fuel to idle. So small that my ScanGauge II can't see the flow rate at an idle. Then when you coasting the IP pump (VE, P-pump, VP44, no sure about CP3)are shut down and NO FUEL FLOW is occuring. This a few reasons why a diesel can idle for such a long time without burning huge amounts of fuel also fuel shutdown is great for kicking the MPG number up high while coasting down a long grade...

Highest record MPG for coasting was 110 MPG on my ScanGauge II(12 miles of forestry road).

Even if I drove the same exact way as before, wouldn't you think that I'd see an increase based solely on what I've done?

Mayfair, I have never seen any improvements from anything I've done to my truck. Right now I'm back to completely stock except for the muffler and I am getting 19 to 20 mpg pretty consistantly. Most of my driving is on traffic free state highways at 50 - 60 mph with a few interstate runs every week. I have tried all types of additives and am currently running my second tank of TCW3 two stroke oil as an additive, and you guessed it no measurable change so far. My last tank I did my usual driving all week long and then took a trip to Charlotte on Friday ( about 235 miles round trip). Most of that trip I was running 70 MPH and I still netted 20.4 MPG. BTW I am now a member of the 700 mile club. I went 701 miles on that last tank of fuel. Now if I sit in stop and go traffic for more than a couple minutes, my lie- o meter starts dropping pretty quickly and I can see it in my calculations when I fill up. Have you ever filled up and drove at a steady 60 or so for an extended time period and then filled up to see what your pure highway mileage is? I would love to know that number.

speed limits. . .ppfffftt. . .they are only speed suggestions here.speed limit may be 45 on the down town connector, however if you do any less than 65 you will get run over by either a soccer mom in her suburban, an eco terrorist in their prius, or that 18 wheeler delivering wheeties to publix.

the only thing faster around here would be Scotty's transporter, but not by much.

I honestly don't remember. Once I pay for something, I put it out of my head. I don't WANT to remember.

If I had to guess though, and please keep in mind, it's ONLY a guess

Aero - about 200 bucks
Edge - 200
K&N - my Pop put it on ( original owner of my Ram )
Valve adjustment - zero

I can't remember what else I mentioned, but that's pretty much all that I've done that I can remember other than tires. I bought the Aero because I needed a muffler, my old one rotted out. I bought tires because I needed tires, not solely because I wanted them. Probably the ONLY thing that I bought solely help with my mileage was the Edge Comp box. I'm honestly not sure if it helped yet because just as I installed it and was going through the motions of finding the right setting, they switched the bled to the winter mix and not just mine, but pretty much everybody's mileage tanked. I add the 2 stroke not for a mileage increase, but for better lube for my VP44.

We'll see ...

Mayfair,

Do you still think your burning winter diesel? We stopped getting it here in North Iowa about 4 weeks ago. I'm very happy to still have 1/2 tank of winter time high cetane fuel and it's good mpg I'm seeing from it, but then the winter fuel I buy is not mixed with #1 diesel or kerosene.
