Yes, there is a cutout in the side of the fender. I'm sure it gets airflow from everywhere under the hood, but I guess the main airflow is from the fender.

in the summertime that setup might run too hot depending on ambient temps... it'll suck in alot of hot air off the turbo area. you may consider feeding it more fresh air from the front by drilling a hole in the shield and adding a hose to it from the front. are you still on the winter blend fuel? did you ever put the ATS intake on or are you still in the deciding stages?

Ah... Air filters... There is a lot of tales and truths out there...

I'll give you a truth (2ng Gen's)... Aftermarket filter and cold air intake I've not seen one that is better than a stock air box they are all equal. If you take a ODB II reader and watch the IAT sensor temp you find that at cold start the IAT and ECT sensor should match outside air temps. But as you warm up the engine the engine coolant start to warm the head and intake manifold. So no matter how cold the intake air is the manifold is going to warm that air up. Typically you'll see +40*F over what the outside temps are so like if its 45*F here outside its going to read about 85*F at the IAT sensor.The only time this will change is when your idling the IAT sensor temp rises sharply and under heavy boost the temp falls. (with ineffiency of the turbo).So no matter if you install a IceBox, BHAF, K&N, Etc the IAT temps don't change at all...

But now it come down to filter ability of removing dirt and flowing large amounts of air... This where line change quickly...



My BHAF is 4 years old now 60K+ miles and never been changed yet... I got a brand new one sitting in the garage waiting to take it place but the filter minder still doesn't move. (Only timethe filter minder willmove is when the filter get soaked...)

Mayfair[sm=icon_cheers.gif] In your Mileage displays from you gauges, do they compare to hand caluculations? If they do, which wires are giving this data? I just don't understand why this data can't be fed into the overhead display console on my truck and give accurate readings. In the wifes GMC Yukon their trip_Mileage display is accurate everytime within .5 MPG. vs hand calculations.

I'm not sure which blend of fuel we have right now, but hopefully we'll make the switch soon if we haven't already

I was going to go with the Banks based solely on the fact that I found one for 200 bucks, but the guy sold it out from underneath me so I never got anything. If I decide to re-open tha can of worms, I'll probably go with an ATS, although I was just quoted 299 from Banks direct so I don't know what I'll do.

Doesn't that cutout in the fender pull the air from below the truck already?


MM73 - I like the BHAF, and if my K&N got trashed I'd go that route next, but since my K&N seems to trap dirt, I'll keep it. I do wonder though if I'm not shooting myself in the foot by cleaning it as much as I do. I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't filter better if it was kept a LITTLE dirty.

agreed.... flow is where the gain is. however when I had my edge and was monitoring the IAT's, my butt dyno told me that when the intake temp was between 100 & 110 deg F, I was making more power than on either side of it. Visually I could see less smoke when launching from a stop sign/light. With that in mind, when I put back on my rad side flap and mileage went up, it told me that on the diesels, cold air will not necessarilly mean more power. I think getting closer to that 100~110 deg mark will yield better numbers.

mayfair cleaning your air filter too often can lead to problems, they catch more dust/dirt when theyve already got dirt on em, if you keep em super clean you are actually allowing more debris into your diesel...
