Hey mytowrig, I guess you can ponder the what if's till the cows come home. Certainly upgrading a few important parts such as the valve body or t/c will make a difference, but then in the back of your mind you may start wondering ok, what about the flex plate, or should I have added a larger pan, so on and so forth.
Then consider, that by staying with the stock transmission, but still running hard with the big dogs you run the risk of probable doom ............when you're least prepared monetarily of timely. Thats how life wacks me occasionally, when I'm not quite ready for it.
Always better to make these decisions and upgrades at your own convienence, rather than the opposite.
Just my opinion...........

i havent quite decided on how i want to handle it. i could always just leave everything stock and just run a low power setting on the smarty. easily the smartest choice, economically and in every other way, but wheres the fun in that? i may just wait till i have it paid off, then decide if i want to spend more on it or save my hard earned greenbacks. i plan to pay it off by mid december, and by then i still should have less than 6k miles on the odo, so if i decide then to go ahead with a new tranny, my stocker should still be almost perfect...

i could put into my truck what would have been my monthly payments... but that would be putting a lot into my truck. remember, its a brand new 07 5.9 that i bought at the end of october 07, and i pay my own way, always have. hell, my dad doesnt even know i have a truck other than my work truck. so the monthly payments are not small to say the least in order to pay it off at the end of the year. hell, all i guess i am trying to say is that it would be nice to build the account after paying all my bills...
