Default True Horsepower

Well the price of fuel finally hit 4.50 a gal. here and considering I'm now retiredI figured it was time to find a cheaper mode of travel. Here I am gettin ready to head into town to do a little shopping. It's only a 12 mile round trip so shouldn't take but about 4 hrs. Hell, being retired I've got the time so giddyup. Sides, time Ol' Dollar earned his keep anyway. Hey, Cowboy Bob, want ta come along??

It's funny that you posted this because just today I was wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper to ride a horse to work. I've never owned a horse, so I would know, but I guess you'd save on

Insurance,
Registration
Inspection
Fuel - well, I know a horse has gotta eat, but what do they eat? If they eat grass, that's everywhere

Do you think it'd be cheaper to own a horse at this point? I always wanted to be a cowboy !!

Probably not, I'm down to four now because the price of hay has just about doubled in price inthe last two years. I don't have enough pasture with only 10 acres so feed year round. I'm estimating the cost of hay this year for the four at about 3000.00. Thats a lot of diesel. I've been around horses all my life so to me they're the natural order of things, plus I like to spend time packing into the mountains for a few days at a time. I 'll show you a picture of Minam pass in the Wallawas in Oregon. Outside my back gate is 70,000 acres of private timber land thats only open to hike, bike, or horses. Horses can take you places you may not ever see any other way. Teddy Roosevelt said it best, " Theres something about the outside of a horse thats good for the inside of a man."

Yeah hay is expensive. last fall I paid 100 bucksa ton and ran out before my pasture started to grow due to the long winter. This spring I had to buy a ton to get me by cost me 200 bucks. And since my dad sold the ranch and all the cattle, I have to buy hay from other people now. I love my horses but life doesnt afford enough time to ride them as a main mode of transport.

It's funny that you posted this. I was thinking about doing the same thing this weekend. There is a local store 2 miles down the street. I was thinking about riding one of the horses down there just for fun.

For now it is much cheaper to have a horse than to have a car. I bale my own hay and sell what is left over. The horses go to the vet 1 time a year for their annual checkup and shots ($120 a horse). And I only spend about $75 a month in feed and other stuff for them. They get shoed once every 6-8 weeks for $50 a horse. All of this is much cheaper than gas, insurance, tires, oil and other maintenance.

I don't know. 1 horse= say $800/yr on food. I'm in a pace to use about $2600 in the truck, and that's if prices stay where they are. I'd have to keep it though because the horse wouldn't like pulling the 3000# boat, especially up the ramp.

Do they make a/c for those things?

LMAO .... I'm guessing they eat HAY and not GRASS huh?

Do they need a lot of room to roam? Do you think I could keep one on my driveway?
