There really is no rhyme or reason why these prices keep fluctuating to the extent that they do. Lat week, I paid 4.17 in Jersey. Yesterday it's at 4.49.

WTF ?!?!?

Believe me I keep an eye out so I know I'm getting the lowest around me, when it was down to 2.50 you see stores dipping below that once in a while, so when I was using 2 tanks a week, I kept up on what was on my entire route, sometimes it was worth it to lose 20 minutes fighting traffic off the big road to get a good deal on fuel.

Haven't seen it do anything but go up and up since we hit 3 dollars and hasn't stopped yet,so Murphy Oil has been the cheapest for meand then don't adjust their prices by the hour, like most do now days.
I was also filling up atthe Murphy's on Rinehart in Sanford because they were always lower than everybody else. But lately I have discovered I get approx. 3 mpg better by using Shell diesel.
This has occurred three times in the past 3 months. Now I pay a little more for diesel, but the added mpg's is well worth it!!

Can there be that much difference in fuel qualities?

If there is a difference it would be in their additives. On our local news it showed that all the fuel for Austin is delivered at one location and that each brand of gasoline adds its own additives, but other than that the gasoline at each station is coming from the same stock. I would assume this is also true for Diesel. That said, I think Shell has better additives than the rest.

Yes there is a difference in fuel qualities. I can buy diesel down the street from Murphy USA and for the same price or sometimes its a bit higher I get 1-2 mpg from there diesel when compared to Murphy's. The last time I ran the numbers the cost would have to be more then 12 cents a gallon difference before it would no longer be cost effective to buy the higher priced diesel. The diesel I buy is a premium fuel compared to what Murphy sells and it also has a higher Cetane rating then what Murphy sells. In fact the fuel I buy claims the following.

Performance & Protection

* 5% better fuel economy[1]
* 5% more power[1]
* Electronically blended at terminal
* High cetane number: 42-46[2]
* Easier cold start performance
* Reduces regulated emissions by an average of 15%[3]
* Reduces smoke and white smoke by 30%
* Seasonally adjusted down to -10° F (CFPP -15° F)[4]
* Superior rating by Cummins L-10 injector cleanliness test
* Greatly exceeds EMA lubricity specifications[5]
* Highest corrosion protection ratings[6]
* No after-market additives needed

Where do they sell "premium diesel"? I have never seen that at any fuel station.
