Definately recommend getting a smarty, and if your interested in stacking go with the smarty sr. it has great options and tons of power most guys prefer to stack smarty's with TST or Edge Juice with Attitude. Personally I would stay away from Diablo products, but thats just me... more ppl will chime in and I'm sure you'll get someone with a stacked set-up like I mentioned, its a verygood set-up on our trucks

I've had the Superchip and theEdge w/attitude, love my Edge. May be stacking it in the future with a Smarty.

I am brand new to this site as well, and just bought a used 2006 Ram 2500 Mega Cab CTD 4X4 SLT this past weekend!

I am also looking for a programmer. The truckcame with well worn295/70R17 Nitto Grabber tires on it, and I will need to replace them soon. I was only able to average about 20mpg driving the truck from Houston back to Phoenix at 65mph. I had hoped for better mileage. I will certainly replace them with the stock size to improve the fuel mileage.

I am mainly interested in better fuel mileage. If more power comes along with the better fuel economy, that's fine. Which programmer or chip interface gives the best fuel mileage?

Are you getting that 20 mpg off the overhead? aka lieometer? do your mpg calculations by hand.

welcome to DF...

to the OP, Smarty is the way to go. dont have one personally as I'm still waiting to get rich enough to spring for one. I have a TST powermax CR49 and love it, sits between the pcm & motor.

Thanks, for the welcome, Steve! Nice to finally be a diesel owner.

I did hand calcs. If you want specifics, I got 19.4 mpg from Houston to El Paso, and then got 20.6 mpg from El Paso to Phoenix. The lie-o-meter was reading about 20.2 on the first leg and about 21.2 on the second leg, so it was reading a little high. (I am not sure if the speedometer has been recalibrated for the larger tires or not.)

I will have to say that it's nice to have a big tank that can get me from El Paso to home without stopping for fuel!

You recommend the Smarty - is the Smarty Jr. okay as well? I don't think I need all of the bells and whistles of the Smarty (Sr.). I will be towing a race car to around the southwest (mainly CA,UT, NV and TX), and would like a littleextra power when towing, but when empty (most of the time), I am really looking for better mpg.

I have read up on some of the programmers/chips: the Superchips, Smarty, Workhorse, Quadzilla, Diablo, Bully Dawg, Edge Juice, Banks and a few others, but what is the TST powermax CR49? Sorry, I am a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

tst...http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...D=135&HS=1

lotta bells & whistles on it. Not sure who's stacked anything with the smarty jr, one guy recently stacked a smarty & edge IIRC and gained over 2 mpg. it was within the last month so if you search this forum back to mid May you should find it. now that I think about it, probably within the last 2 weeks...
