12 valve vs. 24 valve
Hey whats up everybody, i have a question to ask you guys about 12 valve cummins turbo and 24 valve cummins turbo. The question is, "what is the difference between both 12 valve and 24 valve cummins turbo diesel?"
Thanks
Thanks
the 12 valve has well 12 valves and everything is mechanical while the 24 has 24 valves and has much more electronics on it. the injection pumps on the 24s don't last nearly as well as the ones on the 12s. what else did you want to know?
Both still have good low end torque. There are two generations of 24 valves though. The 1998.5-2002.5 ones with the VP44 rotary injection pump, and a 2002.5-2007 one with common rail high pressure injection.
The 12 valves torque and power curves aren't that flat, and they to loose some power in the upper RPM range, these can make some BIG power.
The VP44 24 valves have a flatter torque curve, and can maintain that torque higher up in the RPM range. The common rail 24 valves have an almost completely flat torque curve from 1400 RPM to 2900 RPM. Which is great for towing.
Of course this all assuming stock engines.
If you plan on making big power, and you aren't that limited budget wise, I would look into the 24 valves, especially the common rail ones, they can make a lot of power, but still be well behaved on the street
As far as towing ratings go, obviously the newer the truck the higher the rating, and the newer the truck, the more power the engine will have, making it easier to tow

wow that is very interesting but im not planning to buy cummins diesel right now. i will next year and i am researching to make sure i make the right decision, lol... i will keep looking for more things about 24 valve cummins....
the 12 valve is virtually bullet proof. it is considered the million mile motor! the 24 is good but has the vp injection pump which is what kills it since it is lubricated by the fuel and can easily go bad if not enough fuel pressure is present. they both do have different kinds of power and the 24 are supposed to have more but im sure that a 12 would still haul whatever you wanted to. my uncle has a 12 and hauls a stock trailer loaded with sometimes 4-5 cows. his truck pulls the trailer like it isn't even there and his is almost all stock.
by the way you didn't state the year of the 24 valve motor you were looking at. i assumed that you meant a 2nd gen but if you meant a 3rd gen then that would change things a little. the third gen would have more power than the 2nd and would also have a different injection pump that is lubricated by the engine oil and not the fuel so it is much better than the 2nd gen 24 valve.
