What CTD is best 5.9 or 6.7?

 

i believe the 5.9 is the one to pick. others may disagree, but it also depends on what you plan on doing. if you plan to mod it, the 5.9 would be the way to go. i also wanted to buy new, but have done my share of research and am still learning a lot from fellow members, and i have found the best way to do it is to find an 06 or 07 with the 5.9 that is slightly used

i have an '07 6.7, and have never owned a 5.9. personally i think it is a good engine not a single problem after 42000km. the biggest thing i dislike is the catalyst crap, not being able to idle as long. with winters here typically -20c - -40c i would have got the 5.9 had i done more research. hopefully dodge will come up with a better way to deal with this in the future.

 

I had the same debate as you a year ago. I decided to go with a 5.9L. The primary reason was because the 6.7L requires ULSD fuel. The 5.9L can take both. This was a problem at the time. Not sure about now. Still, places like Mexico are questionable. I also didn't want to deal with all of the emissions crap on the 6.7L truck. I'm sure the 6.7L engine is a good engine, but I plan on keeping my truck for awhile, so I wanted to make sure I got an engine that was proven, not one that has yet to be proven.

 

The 5.9L is a great engine but the 6.7L has more torque. Granted the 6.7L has had some issues with the particulate filter, but these issues are being worked out.

 

The 5.9L is the way to go. They are having to many problems with the new emissions crap on them. Also the 5.9L trucks get alot better fuel mileage.

 

5.9... easier to mod and work on IMO...

 

can easily get 18 mpg, 19's are doable but tough, over 20 1x. this with the wide 33's on there. if I had a tire that weighed less (narrower 33") I'd probably be hitting the 20's easier.
