Default How good does the computer calculate?

I'm looking at a 2006 2500 5.9l auto 4x4 4 door short box.
It has 45,000 miles on the truck. My question is before i buy this truck i want to make sure it gets good milage. The computer up top says 22.5. I havnt been able to drive this truck more than 30 miles. So i really cant compare how good the computer does. How far off is the computer? Is it usually pretty close?

Also how many gears does that auto tranny have in 2006?

First through third gear ranges are provided by the clutches, bands, overrunning clutch, and planetary gear sets in the transmission. Fourth gear range is provided by the overdrive unit that contains an overdrive clutch, direct clutch, planetary gear set, and overrunning clutch.

GEAR RATIOS
The 48RE gear ratios are:1st -2.45:1
2nd -1.45:1
3rd -1.00:1
4th -0.69:1
Rev. -2.20:1

The overhead console isn't 100% accurate until approximately 147,000 miles. And since the truck you are talking about isn't even broken in i would say that the computer probably is a little off like maybe 1.5-2 mpg.

Cool, Is the auto tranny just as tuff as the manual in the towing since? I could really get 20-23mpg out of that truck?

Default just my opinion

we took our truck to tombstone last year, the mileage was at 5000 kilometers, about 3600 miles. i had done an oil change and ran it fairly constantly at any existing speed limit, sometimes well over. i was cresting 18 mpg, on our latest trip with a camper with are running between 12 and 13 mpg.

I would agree with the computer being 1.5 - 2 mpg off. I am getting 14-15 around town and 19 on the highway. I'm sure I could do a little better if I stoped putting my foot in it.

I wish!! Mine has been consistently 4 mpg off since day one! There's a reason it's called the LIE-O-METER!

Just put a trip on my truck 2 weeks ago, the best tank figured by hand, not the computer, was 21.4. The average for my 1500 mile round trip with 4 adults and the bed levelled off with our gear, some driving in the Smoky Mountains, was 19.7. The overhead runs anywhere from 2-3 MPG off. You can't beat that. My truck gets the same mileage as my 300C.

How good does the computer calculate?

It doesn't. I just use mine as a reference. Hand calculate for best results.
