Question Good deal on 3500 cummins.. or not

A good friend of mine is willing to sell my his 1995 3500 dually cummins std cab long bed 4x4 but it needs a new trans.. he said he'd sell it to me for Kelly blue book price minus the cost of a tranny... how much do you think this would cost? The truck has about 120,000 miles on it and has sat in a barn the last 3 years.. also since it has been sitting what can I expext to have to do to it to get it to run?... I plan on making it a plow/work truck as I already have a smaller ram as my daily driver

What is the KBB value? I did not know trucks were selling at this value. Cars/trucks are selling for much for much less these days. Now that it needs a tranny, I would definetely not buy it at KBB minus the price of the tranny. The way I see it, if you do not buy it (being his friend and knowing about the condition of the truck etc) I am sure nobody else will buy it at the already mentioned price. Just get back to him in a year or 2 and when reality sets he will sell it at a more reasonable price.

Here are some prices on tranny off ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

I see your point.. I was hoping to pick it up for less than $2,000... it's pretty much in mint condition minus the tranny.. i'll be ging to look at it jan. 22nd... I'm hoping I could get by with a rebuild

Auto Tranny? Stick? I wouldn't put a stock unit back in.

Ebays a bad way to go for a trans IMO. Im assuming its an auto. A basic rebuild for an auto is around $3500, with an upgraded TC and VB. If your gonna do it, dont put stock TC and VB in it. So anywhere from, say, $3k up to $7500, depending on how wild you get with it.

Go with a reputable builder of these transmissions. HTS, Suncoast, Goerend. They all have trannys in 10 sec diesel trucks, so they obviously know what theyre doing.
