Default Need help selecting a programmer for 03

OK, my dad has an 03 cummins with the hd tranny with 125k miles on it. We had a quadzilla 60hp chip on it, and it has given us a lot of trouble, and have decided to get rid of it, and replace it with a programmer. We want something with about the same power, or maybe a little more, but we want the transmission to still last since its out of warranty. We have looked at a few, but can't decide which one to get.

Any suggestions on a transmission-safe programmer that won't break the bank?

You need to try and stick with a programmer that stays below 70hp. I'm almost certain the stock tranny won't last with more than that. I've got the torque dog on my 03 and have had to upgrade my tranny when it went boom about 10 months ago. The Torque Dog has up to 90hp. Just my .02

ya, ive heard the smarty chip is about the best, but isnt it pretty expensive? He had a diablo 90hp in his 7.3 super duty, and went through 3 trannys b4 the warranty was up, so we figured its a good idea to get one with lower power

Is the hypertech or bully dog any good at not tearing up the tranny?

ok, i like the smarty jr. but its 500 bucks, and we can get a really good deal on a diablo power puck (less than 200 bucks brand new)

has anybody had any good/bad experiences with the powerpuck?

With the "powerpuck" which adds fuel you may find the tranny out lasting the stock injectors. Been there done that. A safer chip is the Dr. performance. But then again it adds fuel which in turn drives up the EGTs. Safest would be a programmer like the Smarty jr., which has 3 hp settings along with torque and timming adjustments and now the PoD. The PoD allows one to lower increase the power on each of the settings, for instance if you set your porgrammer to "performance 100hp" and you truck is "STOCK" hp rating of (for example only) 265 + sw3 100hp = 365hp total and you dial the Pod to 50% then you have 185+/- hp, good for open road cruising. The smarty will control the EGTs and is said to be easy on the tranny. smarty can also read DTCs and change ABS for different tire sizes. The Edge Juice may be another consideration.
