Which one?
I have to get a truck for work for when I graduate and I'm on Spring Break right now so I might get one this week. My question is...which of these 2 trucks would you pick? Both are in great condition.
2005, 5.9L cummins with just under 47k miles for $23,950
or
2007, 6.7L cummins with 51k miles for $26,995

Depends on what your gonna do with it. Do you want an automatic or manual? Gonna keep it stock, or mod it some?
Stock auto goes to 68rfe. But start turning up the power, over a certain amount that would require a beefier unit, well then Id lean towards the 48re in the 05. Built 68rfes at this point are hit or miss, and dont have much available to handle power at this point. They are more reliable as a stocker even behind power than a built one is...
Both would likely be running a G56 manual, but the 05 could have the NV5600.
Keep it stock, 05. Gonna mod it, 6.7. Reason being is the 6.7 NEEDS the DPF deleted and EGR blocked off. Plain and simple. The 05 doesnt have all that emissions crap. Both are capable of making some big power, but I dont think youll be going there...
Cant go wrong with either one really

I'm not sold on the 6.7 yet myself. I have a good buddy with an '08 been riding around just about since day one with a CEL and two different dealerships have just about given up on trying to fix the issue, basically telling him to "just drive it like that"...
All other things being equal, go with the 5.9, unless you are gonna have it hooked to a heavy trailer all the time. The 6.7 is not the best daily driver or stop and go setup.
The EGR, DPF and VGT turbo really need to be run hard and to keep them from getting fouled up.
As for tranny's, either of them is fine in stock form and will hold up to stock power just fine. BUT, if you are going to build some power, you want the 48. There is a much better aftermarket for both it and the 5.9.
Mileage is better in the 5.9. No emissions or regen crap to deal with.
Maintenance is cheaper on the 5.9. Just compare the price of fuel filters which will be one of your frequent requirements.
Overall, I say 5.9, but I'm biased.

thanks for the input guys. the only thing i'm going to do to the truck is add a programmer, air intake, and exhaust to squeeze mileage out of it. not looking to race it or anything. also, i'm going with an automatic b/c i get tired of messing with a manual after a while. i will be towing trailers full of roofing equipment. idk the poundage, but one is 16 ft. and one is 18 ft. I'm leaning towards the 5.9 b/c I hear great things about it since it is a proven motor and the fact that it's a beast. More ideas and suggestions are welcome...
5.9L is they only way to go. I have a friend with a 6.7 and hes been in and out of the dealer about once a month with problems.
