Exclamation sluggish 01 ctd... need help!!

i have an 01 ctd that feels sluggish. i have the juice with attitude and when its on level 5 is the only time it has any gumption. my egt's are in the hi 700's to low 800's driving down the interstate. the monitor reads 0 boost psi but it sounds like its working just fine. there is a little smoke on start up and nothin after. fuel pressure is 14 at idle and 11 at a wot. anything i can check or do? thinking of an 05 turbo upgrade....

Start with the basics, before throwing parts at it.
How's the air/fuel filters?
Auto trans? Might be slipping?
Does it coast OK, or seem to drag down?
Just start doing it, or always?
Check the codes, might be a sensor.

No timing adjustment, it's all electronic (that's one of the things tuners do).
If valves have never been done, that's a real good place to start.
