Default Shopping/5.9L Facts?

I am looking to possibly buy my first Cummins. I have been told that the '03 to '07 is a good way to go....24 valve, correct?
My main question is, what to look for and what to stay away from. Are the auto trany's in these reliable with proper maintenance for how long?
Any input would be appreciated!!

Stay with the 5.9 vin.C engines, 03 to 07 good trucks. Mine is a 05 quad short bed w/ 178,000 miles. No major problem, brakes, rotors, etc. Be advised tha the tranmissions on these trucks are (sh* t) Look for one with a newly rebuilt trans, Just had mine redone $3,500. works fine now. Good luck in your quest!!

yes you want a C engine I have a 2004.5 3500 4x4 with 325hp and the trucks with lower years are less HP 305,320 hp depends on the truck and year it was made and what they wanted. ECW said the trans suck. but then again I have stock trans with Bully dog and its set on extreme with it and didn't mess up yet. and yes with proper maint. they will last I change my trans fluid every 60k well this time i changed it at 54k because that's all the miles i got lol but. I will have to say really stay with a 2004.5 and up to 07 5.9 engine Unless the 6.7 has got the dpf delete pipe here check all the info on this post https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-c...e-big-day.html
he has got a 6.7 with all deletes and chip them 6.7 run good if you take all that emissions crap off

The trans in them isn't crap.

It's only crap when you start throwing huge amounts of power at them and drive them like a race car. They're not built for, nor intended for that.

On a stock motor, the trans holds up just fine.

Once you start adding more than 40 - 60 HP, you need to upgrade the torque converter and valve body.

Once you start touching 450HP, then you need to upgrade hard parts.

Will you have problems with the trans?.......throw 100HP tune at it and drive it like a hot rod everyday and you will.

Use it as it was intended and it'll do you fine.
